What is the Atomic theory?
The atomic theory was proposed by John Dalton in 1808. This theory was used to explain different laws, such as the law of conservation of mass. There are four parts to his atomic theory.
Dalton's theory was:
a) All matter is made up of atoms
b) In a given element, all atoms behave the same
- Atoms in a given element, behave differently than atoms in any other element.
c) Atoms combine in whole number ratios to form compounds
- To form a compound, atoms from different elements have to combine.
d) Atoms cannot be created, destroyed, or divided.
- This means that when undergoing a chemical reaction, their masses are conserved.
